Unbundled legal services, also known as legal coaching or limited-scope representation in BC, are a flexible and affordable approach to working with a lawyer. Instead of hiring a lawyer for an entire case from start to finish, unbundled legal services lets clients choose only the specific tasks they want assistance with—paying only for legal help where and when it is needed.
Most people don’t dream of spending their savings on legal fees, especially in the middle of a separation or parenting dispute. Unbundled legal services are the practical workaround. You stay in the driver’s seat, and we jump in only when needed. This means you can use us strictly for the high‑impact moments when a family law professional who has been on the ground makes all the difference.
Unbundled legal services, also known as legal coaching, or limited‑scope representation . . . it represents a very straight-forward idea--break your case into pieces, choose the parts you want help with, and pay only for those parts. The rest you get to do.
There are many examples of unbundled services that Pathway Legal's clients have used.
Your lawyer helps only where you need it, and you do the rest.
Unbundled legal services start with you hiring a lawyer, but the agreement between you and your lawyer (called a retainer agreement) sets out that you’ll only use that lawyer when you need them. Instead of handling your entire case from start to finish, the lawyer steps in for specific tasks.
That support might include reviewing or preparing court documents, offering strategic legal advice, or coaching you before a hearing. This approach is especially common in family law, where people sometimes represent themselves in mediation, four-way meetings, mediation/arbitration, or even court hearings.
Transparently, spending your hard-earned money on legal fees probably isn’t the most thrilling way to use your resources. Unbundled services help keep things more manageable. You still have access to professional guidance when you need it, while staying in control of your case.
Think of it as sharing the workload. Your lawyer handles the complex legal pieces when needed, and you take care of the steps in between.
With unbundled legal services, you can break your legal needs into smaller pieces and choose support only for the parts where it will help the most.
As an example, many of Pathway Legal’s clients use this option when doing a DIY divorce. You may have already started the process on your own but want a lawyer to review documents, check that everything is done properly, or help you prepare for the next step.
Not all lawyers offer unbundled services, but demand continues to grow. That is why, at Pathway Legal, we offer Unbundled Legal Services to our clients. There are also other organizations such as the People's Law School and the BC Law Society’s Family Unbundling Roster that provide directories of lawyers who provide limited scope representation. They also provide great resources to help individuals like you determine if unbundled services are the right fit for their situation.
Unbundled services are not for everyone, however. Whether or not you approach your legal matter this way depends on you. For example, unbundled services work best for people who are organized and have their paperwork in order. If that is not you, you might want to consider hiring a lawyer on a full-service retainer. You can discover more about the Do's and Don'ts of unbundled services here, and figure out if it will be a good fit or not.
Here's the really great news: even if you start with an unbundled services retainer and then change your mind because your case has become more complicated or you feel that you need more legal support than you originally thought, you can always change course and enter into a full-service retainer with your lawyer. It is always helpful to know when to make the switch from unbundled services to a full-service retainer. You can also always discuss this with your lawyer.
Recently, we had a client from Victoria, B.C., who utilized Pathway Legal for legal coaching and unbundled legal services. We will call her Hailey. Her situation is marked by intense and ongoing conflict with her ex-spouse, Mariam. Mariam is what we call in the family law industry a “high-conflict” person.
At the time of writing, this couple has been separated for just over four months, and they have already appeared in court multiple times. There are numerous cross-applications, many filed by Mariam and some by Hailey, in opposition to those filed by Mariam.
The many court applications and proceedings all started with Mariam applying to the court (behind Hailey’s back) for a “Protection Order.” Mariam convinced the Judge that she and their three children were in grave danger because of Hailey’s abuse and violence. Mariam convinced the judge that she had to flee the family home with the children and was at a women’s safe house to keep herself and the children safe.
Mariam testified in court that Hailey did not supervise their three children, allowed them to play on busy streets with heavy traffic, completely unsupervised. She said that Hailey did not know how to keep a clean home and that their house was filthy. She also stated that Hailey did not know how to provide the children with adequate nutrition and that Hailey was constantly screaming at Mariam and the children. Mariam also told the Judge that child protection authorities were involved with their family.
The problem was that none of these allegations was true.
Hailey was not in a financial position to hire a law firm to provide her with full representation. Due to the time required to respond to the sheer magnitude of materials she needed to deal with, it would have cost many tens of thousands of dollars. Hailey was in no financial position to afford that kind of help.
Instead, Hailey engaged Pathway Legal under a limited-scope representation retainer, or, as we call it, unbundled legal services.
Because Hailey ran her own case, she was the one to:
When it came time for court, she hired a Pathway Legal lawyer for the contested court hearings. This was a great strategy. Hailey was able to successfully get the Protection Order set aside and resume parenting of the children.
Hailey is an intelligent person with many skills, so she was able to communicate effectively with Mariam’s lawyer, draft, file, and serve court documents, and keep track of all the court dates that needed to be scheduled.
Hailey was also aware that it should not be her who argued her case before the judge. For that, she hired us at Pathway Legal.
Thankfully, for Hailey and her kids, things have gotten much better. They are now enjoying a much more peaceful existence all around.
Unbundled representation can be an empowering and cost-effective tool, but it is not a one-size-fits-all model—there are many considerations when handling your matter on an unbundled basis, even in high-conflict situations like Hailey's. especially in high-conflict family law matters. If your matter is one of high conflict, you will want to consider whether or not you wish to continue on an unbundled service basis or if you want to switch to full representation.

As you can see, unbundled legal services (also referred to as Limited Scope Representation or legal coaching) are not a one-size-fits-all solution.
In fact, as a family law legal practice on British Columbia, we would be irresponsible to recommend you follow this method without fully considering the pros and cons of your personal situation. When considering whether to engage in this process, realistically assess your own willingness to self-represent, the complexity of your case, and whether saving money is worth the added responsibility and risk.
